HUPD Chief Says Harvard Yard Encampment is Peaceful, Defends Students’ Right to Protest
The present tendency of the University seems to be somewhat anti-club, which is partially wrong. The small group is undoubtedly the most stimulating organization in the world and the more there are the better, as long as they are properly used. As a compromise between the democracy of the House Plan and the exclusiveness of the club system I should suggest the following:
That at some meals in the House the tables be labelled French, Modern, or English Literature, or some other subject of either intellectual or athletic nature which is to be the topic of conversation at that table. Then the student may sit at the table corresponding to his main interest of the moment and thus find the people who have the same interest. This will save much time now wasted in inane conversation and no longer will be seen the tragedy of two people sitting together discussing the mediocrity of the food when they both are vitally interested in the same subject without realizing it.
