PAT O. JOHNSON NAMED NEW WRESTLING COACH

Former Crimson Matman Will Succeed Cliff Gallagher Who Has Resigned to Go to Lafayette

Pat Orr Johnson '33 has been named Varsity wrestling coach on the resignation of Clifford J. Gallagher, it was learned yesterday.

Judged solely on his record Johnson was one of the outstanding wrestlers developed by the man whom he succeeds. Out of 25 bouts Johnson threw his opponent in 16 and was returned a decision in eight others while suffering a single defeat. He was captain of both his Freshman and Varsity teams.

Gallagher, whose resignation is concerned with the curtailment on minor sports appropriations, will become Varsity wrestling and track coach under Esky Clark at Lafayette University.

Crimson grapplers under Gallagher's direction have won 38, including four out of seven against Yale, lost 11, and tied three matches.

In addition to his gymnasium teaching Gallagher moved outdoors to coach the Freshman footballers in 1933 and 1934 and act as assistant to track mentor Jaakko Mikkola this spring.

Before coming to Harvard he had been coach of football, track, and wrestling at Wichita University in Kansas.
