New Haven Police Frown On Outside-Trolley-Car Riders

26,000 Fans Rode to Dartmouth Game Saturday on 180 Cars

A severe blow was dealt to the custom of riding on the rails of New Haven streetcars to the games last weekend, when it was announced that anyone caught so riding would be subject to arrest.

A picture run Thursday in the New Haven Register showing the students piled on the top and dangling from the sides of a street car led to the action.

The danger of riding on the top was illustrated by the fact that company employees must even be paid a special fee to persuade them to get on top to repair the pole which carries enough current to electrocute a person.

180 streetcars were used Saturday to transport about 26,000 fans to the Yale-Dartmouth game, and they ran at one-minute intervals before and after the game. Although more and more people are going to the stadium in their own automobiles, the street car is still the most popular mode of transportation.
