BASKETBALL OUTLOOK BRIGHTER THIS YEAR

Despite the loss of two lettermen from his first team of last season, Coach Wes Fesler believes that this year's basketball Varsity will be better than the 1936-37 quintet which finished its league schedule with six victories and as many defeats.

The two principal gaps to be filled are the center post left vacant by Captain Bill Gray and Leavitt White's forward position. White captained the hoopsters in his Junior year.

Herrick Probably Starting Center.

Slated as Gray's successor at center, John Herrick, who is six feet, six inches tall, has improved considerably from last year in handling the ball. If Herrick is unable to play full-time in every game, Red Lowman may possibly be moved over from forward when substitution is necessary.

Because of his scoring punch and all-around play in past seasons Lowman will apparently have little difficulty in retaining his starting position on the front line.

Lutz Leads Fight for Forward Post

The other forward remains a question with Charlie Lutz and Dick Grondahl leading. Lutz, who led last year's Yardling team, is, according to Fesler, the most talented athlete to report for basketball in the five years he had coached the Crimson.

Grondahl, who pushed a field cart during the football season, has been resting this week and as a result is several weeks behind. Other contenders for the vacant forward position are Chet Legg, a Sophomore, and Fred Heckel, a veteran.

After a week's vacation from athletic activity, Vernon Struck, Varsity full- back and captain of the basketball team will report for the first time tomorrow. Because of the handicap of not playing thus far this season, Coach Fesler indicated that Struck will have to fight for the starting guard post that he held last year.

Another veteran, Ulysses Lupien, is returning and will doubtless start at guard. John Dampeer, who captained the Yardling team three years ago and who is a letterman, is also in the fight for a back position and will in all probability see considerable service during the season.

Opening its first year as a major sport, the Varsity basketball team will meet the M. I. T. hoopsters Wednesday, December 8. Due to Fesler's football coaching during the afternoons, the squad has been practicing only three evenings a week when afternoon sessions started regularly
