Moran Terms YAA Heads 'Red Fronts'

Challenges Lothrop To Debate Question, 'Coughlinism and Communism'

Frank P. Moran, head of the New England division of the Christian Front, yesterday termed both Edward H. James, leader of the recently exposed Yankee-American Action, and the Rev. Donald G. Lothrop, who is minister of the Community Church of Boston, as "fronts for Communist movements."

He also challenged Mr. Lothrop to a debate, possibly to be held in a Harvard hall, on the question of Coughlinism and Communism. Moran's charges were based on the presence in the offices of the Byron Street League, a group sponsored by the minister, of the International League for Peace and Freedom. This organization, Moran alleges, sent representatives to a meeting held in Berlin in 1927 at which were also present official agents of Soviet Russia.

The Christian Front does not plan any action against the Y.A.A., and Moran dismissed James as a "nut with too much money." "The Front has far too many serious opponents to contend with." Moran declared. He revealed that six or seven months ago he learned of the group's activities, and that James was expelled from Germany for alleged Communist activities.
