H. S. U. NOT PEACE VOTE SPONSOR

Issues Over-Simplified by Ballot, H. S. U. President Believes

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Denying that the Harvard Student Union would sponsor the "Yanks are Not Coming" Committee's nation-wide Peace Ballot, as erroneously stated in the CRIMSON yesterday morning, HSU President Alan Gottlieb '41 said last night that the HSU Executive Committee recently decided against handling the vote.

The "Yanks Are Not Coming" Committee, which is backed by AFL and CIO, intends to poll 1,000,000 people in Massachusetts on the question, "Do you want peace or war for America?"

As an explanation for the HSU's refused to conduct the poll here, Gottlieb said, "The ballot's wording 'Do you want peace or war for America?" would not provoke much deep reflection and might encourage thoughtless responses.

"The HSU supports the 'Yanks Are Not Coming' Committee as one of the most powerful and promising peace organizations in this country. However, the value of a ballot with this oversimplification of the issues involved in peace and war was considered by the HSU to be very slight for Harvard."
