With a discussion on "Jefferson and the Crisis" this evening in the Union Upper Common Room, the American Civilization Program will conclude its yearly activities. Awards to the winners of the semi-annual essay contest will be given at a luncheon meeting in the Union at 1:00 o'clock this Friday.
Dr. Dumas Malone, director of the University Press, will lead the discussion about Jefferson. The recipient of a recent grant by the University from the Clark Fund to finish his comprehensive biography of Thomas Jefferson, Dr. Malone is especially interested in Jefferson's ideas about democracy and will discuss them in relation to the political and social problems which have been thrust upon the United States by the present world crisis.
Presiding at Friday's luncheon, Dr. Malone will award the prizes to the winners of this year's contest. Last year, Adam Yarmolinsky '43 won first prize for his essay, "The Influence of Walt Whitman on Later American Poetry."
