10 VETERANS WILL START FOR SOCCER TEAM IN OPENER WITH TUFTS TODAY

Short Training Time May Hamper Squad

Severely handicapped by lack of practice, 1942's Varsity soccer team will undergo a crucial test in its opener against Tufts at 1 o'clock on the Business School field. Together for but one week, the 11 starters must rely on a wealth of 1941 veterans as well as a tricky passing offense to top a seasoned Jumbo squad.

Cramming as much experience into his lineup as it will hold, Coach Jim MacDonald will start six Seniors against a Medford aggregation that boasts eight three-year men. In addition, all but one of the starting Crimson legmen has Varsity experience behind him, the one exception occurring at the vital goalie post, where Sophomore Doug Thompson will hold forth. Thompson, captain of last year's successful Yardling team, won the job with little trouble this year and will take the chief role in the Crimson defense this afternoon.

The Varsity back line and forward wall will both be at full strength for the game today. Fullbacks Bob Harbison and Ward Slingerland both started last year's loss to Yale and have returned to play sound soccer.

The line is experienced, fast, and, oddly enough, untried. All eight men have seen action before, but rarely in the position which they now hold. Thus the efficiency of the present combination is in doubt, but the presence of Captain Dick Gifford at inside forward and Buss Sawhill at center should dispel much of the uneasiness in MacDonald's mind.

To fill out the front wall the Scotsman has chosen George Mallory, and Bud Killam for the halfback slots. Thayer Drake, a toe artist at an outside forward, and Jack Calhoun and Jock Murphy, the speed merchants, who will probably fill the other forward positions.
