Bob Hope's double take may be a bit old by now, but it would take a dead man to keep from laughing when he ties the shoelace on a third foot which appears from under a sofa. As a foreign correspondent, Hope, who could easily receive the award for the world's worst newspaperman, has been in Europe, where he has managed to miss out on almost every important event, including the beginning of the Russian War. He dubs this a vicious rumor. His paper, the Amalgamated Press, recalls him and in a few brief words, Hope is ejected from the office by a none too friendly managing editor.

Hope goes to Washington to see his girl, Dorothy Lamour, and winds up in the midst of a Nazi spy ring. Ready to sacrifice the lives of anyone else, if not himself, Hope blunders his way into the midst of efficient Nazis, crafty Japs, and some Fascists.

Drugged, married to a strip teaser, shot at and generally pushed around, Hope keeps half a step ahead of his pursuers. Cornered by a loony Civil War vet and his invisible partner, Cartwright, Hope gets the vet to shoot Cartwright, in a rather amusing sequence of events.

Given a hot tip on fifth column activities in this country, Hope attempts to track down the enemy, who are hot on his trail. Most of the fleeing is done by Hope. When trapped in a large department store by the Nazi agents, Hope disguises himself in facial paste and a sheet, and hides in a ladies' Turkish bath.

Hope finally is captured, but escapes and is trapped again in the Nazi's secret council chamber. By posing as a dummy in a display. Hope sits on a bicycle and looks scared while the enemy agents quarrel over their prowess of knife throwing. Hope, of course, becomes the object of their skill, but the bicycle comes in handy when he is discovered, for even Hope can toss it at his tormentors.

In the melee which follows, Hope tosses fire extinguishers and miscellaneous junk in the laps of the Nazis, and a well timed intervention by a bunch of soldiers, sailors and marines succeeds in apprehending the enemy agents completely.
