Preparations for Saturday's Princeton battle moved on in high gear yesterday afternoon at Soldiers Field as Coach Harlow put his various elevens through drills designed to overcome the Tigers both offensively and defensively. The squad went through all the phases of the game--pass defense and offense, signal drills, defense against Princeton plays, and kicking under pressure.
Big Paul Governali, erstwhile Columbia great and current Boston Yank highlight, put the Crimson defenders on their mettle for the second successive day as he demonstrated his famous passing technique in limitation (or surpassing) of Carl Leibert, Princeton flinger who passed the Brown backs silly in last Saturday's one sided encounter in New Jersey.
Defensive tactics of the Cantab backfield continued strong against the Governali tosses, although he completed more of his attempts than in Tuesday's drill. Following their defensive practice, the Varsity backs rehearsed their own pass plays, with tailback George Boston standing out in the brief session.
After further routine drills, Harlow put his second string into a scrimmage against a Jayvee eleven while the first-stringers ran through a lengthy signal drill. Standout in the scrimmage was Walt Coulson, whose defensive end play won praise from Harlow.
Guard Nick Rodis emerged from his temporary retirement to reclaim his place on the "A" eleven, running with partner Emil Drvaric. On the "B" team at tackle was Chet Pierce, whose action in the scrimmage was vigorous evidence that he is recovering from his injuries.
The first team as it lined up yesterday included: le, Hauptfuhrer; lt, Houston; lg, Rodis; c. J. Fisher; rg, Drvaric; rt, Davis; re, Cummings; qb, Goethals; rhb, Gannon; lhb, Petrillo, fb, Cowen.
