HUPD Chief Says Harvard Yard Encampment is Peaceful, Defends Students’ Right to Protest
Urging ex-servicemen to "resist the defeatist trend now gaining momentum in America," Edward J. McHale, National Field Secretary of the American Veterans Committee, told the Harvard AVC chapter at its first fall meeting last night in the New Lecture Hall that old-line veterans' groups demonstrated at their recent conventions how incapable they are of meeting today's problems.
Outlining the AVC's program, McHale stressed that the new veterans group reflected the ideas of young men. He stated than on issues strictly concerning college veterans, the organization was currently conducting an intensive two-fold campaign from coast to coast aimed toward sparring the expansion of existing housing and teaching facilities in order to accommodate all those wishing education, and defeating "campus inflation." A recent survey showed, McHale added, that college dormitory rates on a countrywide basis have jumped 20%.
