Rockwell, Smith, High Scorers as Varsity Takes Second Game

By Paul W. Mandel

Two tall men broke BU's back last night, as the varsity basketball team beat the Terriers, 86 to 60. It was the highest score the varsity has made in more than a year. Forward John Rockwell dropped in 24 points to lead the team, and center Ed Smith followed with 19.

Rockwell and Smith worked from center Shepard's double pivot and battered both backboards competently all evening. The varsity quickly pulled ahead and led, 31 to 22, at the half.

A tight man-to-man defense held the Terriers to wild shooting from the backfield and BU's abortive fast break only clicked only when Shepard put in most of his second team at the wind-up the game. Smith and guard Jim Gabler sparked the defense, Smith picking BU passes all around the basket, and Gabler effectively trapping rebounds.

Good on Foul Shots

Twenty-two of the varsity's 86 points came on foul shots; Rockwell alone made made eight points with free throws. Shepard gas been making his charges fire 50 foul sgits a day against the Blockhouse backboards, and last night the practice paid off.

Shepard limited his own fast-break attack last night in order to take advantage of Rockwell and Smith's fine play beneath the boards. Both big men picked up eight field goals, with Rockwell knocking in rebounds and Smith scoring frequently on his hook shot. The high scorers played most of the way, finally bowing out to Captain Bill Prior and John Stevenson when the game was safely put away.

BU's shifting defense was frequently sloppy and uncoordinated. The Terriers failed to pick up men and fouled often, and Shepard's squad was able to break in easily to score. A fast sophomore, Charlie Carson, led the Terrier scoring with 12 points.
