27 Boxers to Compete for University Championships

Twenty-seven athletes weighed in between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. yesterday at the indoor Athletic Building in preparation for the University boxing championships. The fighting gets under way in the Boxing Room of the Blockhouse at 3 p.m. this afternoon, and continues sporadically until the finals Thursday night.

There was a far smaller number of entrants than were expected, and considerably fewer than the number which competed in the House Championships two weeks ago. "It looks like the House tournament was the big one this year," commented Intramural Director Adolph W. Samborski '25.

Top class in the number of entrants was the 155 pound division, boasting nine men including newly crowned House champion Johnny Baker of Dudley. There are five men competing at both 145 and 165, and four at 175.

House Champions Favored

Each one of these classes is dominated by a House champion. At 145 Tom Butler of Dunster is the favorite, at 165 Hugh Smith of Winthrop leads the pack, and at 175 George McNear of Kirkland is favored. McNear won the unlimited title in the House tourney, but was able to make the weight at 175 for this match. Footballer Phil Isenberg, House winner at 175 pounds, is not competing. Isenberg won the title by a TKO last year.

Three men will gain their University boxing titles unopposed. Ruse Bath is the only entrant at 125 pounds, Charley Weiss the lone fighter at 130, and Fred Ravreby the only heavyweight. Weiss, boxing for Kirkland, won the College title in the House tournament, and Ravreby has already annexed the freshman heavyweight title.
