The varsity's plastic football helmets gleamed under a battery of floodlights yesterday as Coach Lloyd Jordan sent his squad through an offensive and defensive scrimmage against the jayvees.

Norm Shepard's jayvees, directed by quarterback Bill Kierstend were hard pressed to make any appreciable gains against a varsity defense which included ends Stan Briton and Dike Hyde, linemen Phil Connelly, Bill Rosonan, Duke Sedgwick, and Jerry Kanter; backers-up Buddy Lemay and Tommy Ossman; halfbacks Dusty Burke and Hardy Cox; and safety man Dave Warden.

When Jordan made substitutions in his defensive team, Fred Ravreby and George Emmons came on as ends; Bob Fallon, Nick Culolias, John Jennings, and Sid Kane as linemen; Bainy Frothingham replaced Lemay; Paul Campbell and Gil O'Neil went in as halfbacks; and Jerry Bitz became safety man. Thus, Ossman, who apparently is being groomed for considerable service as a line-backer this year, was the only man who was not replaced. Kane came up from the junior varsity to fill in for Bob Stargel, who was absent from practice, and the injured Aruie Horween.

When the varsity went on the offensive, the sophomore end combination of Hank Rate and Paul Crowley continued to run with the first-string. John Nichols and Connelly were the tackles, Rosenau and Kanter the guards, and Lemay the center. Carroll Lowenstein joined Warden, John West, and Phil Isenberg in the backfield.

Lowenstein and Ray worked on their punting, the former sending almost every kick 40 - 45 yards from the line of scrimmage.

The practice ended with a spirited signal drill, Jordan jogging along behind each team with a stop watch, and wind sprints.
