Local Transfer Board 17 disclosed two new Selective Service orders yesterday--one, a somewhat puzzling provision cancelling the deferments of certain men in organized reserves, and the other delaying the induction or physicals of some formerly eligible veterans until further notice.
The second order has not been difficult for the board to interpret. Entitled Operations Bulletin 51, it grants postponement of physical or induction to veterans who prior to February 24, 1948 entered upon active duty, and who after that date were honorably discharged upon the completion of two or more years service. Heretofore, such veterans were considered eligible draft material.
The first order seemingly cancels the deferment of men in certain organized reserve units who were previously deferred under Memorandum No. 20. But officials at Local Transfer Board 17 are confused whether this new order actually supersedes the earlier memorandum. They will try to clarify the directive and the new regulations will be printed in the CRIMSON.
