'56 Eleven Tackles Varsity; Simulate Colgate Defense

Bob Margarita brought his freshman football team over to the varsity field yesterday and the Yardlings provided the varsity with a good preview of what it might expect from Colgate Saturday.

The Yardlings duplicated the heralded Red Raider defensive alignments and the middle of their line held up well against the rushes of fullback John Culver and tailback Dick Clasby.

Only when the varsity passed or ran wide was it able to pick up large amounts of yardage. Clasby and Hardy Cox, the first and second tailbacks, did most of the throwing, although John Ederer threw several successful wingback reverse passes to end Paul Crowley.

Sophomore tailback Paul Murphy worked with the second offensive backfield some of the time, and he was most successful when he carried the ball on wide plays.

While the offensive units worked against the freshmen, the defensive group was scrimmaging the junior varsity. The defensive group looked impressive, with Bob Hardy at left side linebacker, turning in a good share of the tackles.

Outstanding for the Yardling team in the scrimmage were newly-elected captain Dave Bodiker as center and linebacker, and end Joe Pettiford.
