A college might as well sponsor a racing stable as a big-time football team, Dr. Robert M. Hutchins, former president of the University of Chicago, said yesterday.
"The jockeys could wear school colors and the horses wouldn't have to take entrance examinations," Hutchins told a special House Committee investigating tax-exempt foundations.
Hutchins, now an associate director of the Ford Foundation, abolished football at Chicago ten years ago. He said he saw no relationship between higher education and what he called "industrial type" football.
