Overtime Goal Marks Soccer Win Over Jeffs

Holmes Scores Winning Goal

A charging Crimson line offset a tight, yet inexperienced Amherst defense Saturday, enabling the varsity soccer team to take its second straight match, 3 to 2, in overtime. The seasoned Crimson forwards looked especially good in the clutch, and provided the margin in a well-played contest.

Hank Holmes, Crimson left outside, scored the winning goal midway through the first overtime period on a pass across the mouth of the goal from Ken McIntosh. McIntosh, right outside, accounted for the other two Crimson markers. Ford and Hall scored for Amherst.

The game started slowly, with both teams playing defensively. Ford put the Lord Jeffs ahead eight minutes into the second period, but McIntosh tied the score a minute and a half later. The Crimson forward put the varsity ahead, 2 to 1, late in the same period.

Hall knotted the contest near the three-quarter mark in the third stanza, and the game turned into a helter-skelter battle for a winning goal which lasted until the end of regular play.

In the first overtime period, the Crimson again assumed control, and Holmes scored the winning goal. The pressing Crimson line maintained complete control, keeping the ball in Amherst territory through the end of the contest.

Crimson goalie Elliott Finkelstein was forced to leave the match late in the third quarter, when he was kicked in the lip after falling on a loose ball. Jim Perkins replaced him in the net, and turned in three good saves during the hectic final period. Finkelstein should be able to start in the Crimson's next contest on Wednesday.
