GAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., Dec. 6--The Vanguard test rocket--with U.S. hopes for some recaptured prestige aboard--barely struggled off the ground today, then fell back and exploded.
Although there are two other Vanguard rockets at the missile base here, no other launching try is expected within three weeks.
The blow to American prestige came in the final stage of buildup for the Allied summit conference at Paris, where American leadership faces severe tests.
Reds Say Rocket Here
MOSCOW, Dec. 6--Nikita Khrushchev declared tonight part of the carrier rocket of Sputnik I fell in the United States Sunday.
However, Dr. Fred L. Whipple, director of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, said there have been no indications the rocket of Sputnik I fell to earth in the United States or its territories.
Teamsters Expelled
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J., Dec. 6--The AFF-CIO today expelled the International Teamsters Union by a 5-1 margin on charges it is dominated by corruptive influences, principally President-elect James R. Hoffa.
Contacted during a recess in his federal court trial on wiretap charges in New York, Hoffa said the ouster wouldn't weaken the union.
