The varsity fencing team suffered its second straight loss of the season Saturday against a strong Columbia team, by a score of 17 to 10. The squad will make its third try for a victory next Saturday against the City College of New York.
In both sabre and epee events, Columbia fencers outscored the varsity, winning 10 of 18 matches. The Crimson made its weakest showing in epee with only two wins in the nine bouts.
Captain Bill Trebileock was the outstanding fencer for the varsity with victories in all three of his foil matches. Manual Cabral led the sabremen, winning two out of three bouts, which equalized his showing against Cornell earlier in the season.
The defeat by Columbia brings the Crimson record to two losses, no wins in Ivy League competition. The fencing team lost to Cornell 16-11, three weeks ago. In this meet, Don Tingle and Mike Woolf each won two of three matches to aid Cabral in giving the Crimson a victory, 6-3 in the sabre division.
