HUPD Chief Says Harvard Yard Encampment is Peaceful, Defends Students’ Right to Protest
Large hand-scrawled signs saying "Howard Johnson's," "Bleak House," and simply "No!" have suddenly appeared on dorm roofs as 'Cliffies protested the most obvious manifestation of "the House System": fairy-tale colored paint.
North House's bright blue bell tower ("It clashes with the sky.") prompted aesthetics to re-name it "Bleak House," while others, of a less literary disposition, simply proclaimed "No!" Rumors that Moors Hall 'Cliffies planned to paint the bathrooms the same shocking blue have been subsequently denied.
The only sign still surviving the weather and care-takers is yellow-doored Barnard's label "Howard Johnson's." This reference was explained by a freshman as "Well, if the doors were orange..." The dining hall management has made no comment to date.
East House doors and decorations--a happily-ever-after red--have so far evoked no 'Cliffie witticisms.
Three dormitories compose each official House, with color the only physical bond. Social, cultural, and intellectual activities for the House units are now being planned.
