Skaters Hustle By Dartmouth 3-1; Zellner Scores Two, Burnes One

The Harvard hockey varsity hustled and passed the puck better last night than it has in weeks, and came out of its last game in Watson Rink with a 3-1 upset over Dartmouth.

Eddie Zellner was the Crimson offensive star with two goals, both scored during Dartmouth penalties. Kenny Burnes got Harvard's other goal, the one that put the Crimson ahead for good, early in the third period after Dartmouth had drawn blank rate in the second.

Coach Cooney Welland's changes in the Crimson line-up paid off beautifully. Wade Welch played in the goal for the first time since he lost 5-3 at Dartmouth a month ago, and made 25 saves, including some beauties in the first periods.

Chip Scammon moved from his usual defensive spot to right wing, and Kevin Burke and Pres Wolcott filled in on defense. Burke, playing in only his second varsity game of the year, was particularly impressive, carrying the puck like an old pro.

But it was Harvard's general hustle that propelled it past Dartmouth. During the numerous Crimson penalties. Pete Miller was all over the ice, and Burnes checked the husky Indians with no regard for his own health.

Harvard is now 2-5 in the Ivy League, and Dartmouth 6-3, with virtually no chance of catching Brown.

After a lackluster and scoreless first period, Harvard began to fly in the second. At 9:42, Pete Waldinger centered Eric Rosenberger's pass out to Zellner, who poked in the puck to put the Crimson ahead.

Harvard kept pressing in the Green end for most of the period, but it was Dartmouth that finally scored. On one of the few times that the Crimson defense failed to clear the puck, Karl Andrews knocked in Dough Hayes' rebound with just 25 seconds left.

Burnes' go-ahead goal, at 4:05 of the last period, was set up by a brilliant length-of-the-rink dash by defenseman Bobby Clark. Zellner sewed it up just 47 seconds later by driving in Baldy Smith's pass from 20 feet out.
