Hoo! Wot Stink! Langdell routed

By Cathleen J.cohen

At 10:15 Wednesday night, a second year law student studying on the south side of the Langell Library reading Room turned to his neighbor and said "pardon me, but when was your last shower?"

The gentleman whose hygiene was in question replied with a curt "This morning" and added "I was about to ask you the same thing. What is that horrible smell?"

That horrible smell turned out to be issuing from two sulphur bombs, commonly known as stink bombs, planted in Langdell earlier that evening by person or persons unknown. Two Circulation Desk attendants, Lawrence Corbett and Alfrado Ochoa, followed their noses and found a shoebox containing one bomb outside the door of the south entrance to the Reading Room. Soon afterwards, an unidentified law student discovered the second in a phone booth at the south stairwell in the basement.

Susan J. Segal '62, a second year stu- dent, spoke yesterday of "thick yellow, sulphurous fumes" which drove her out of the library just after 10 p.m. Many others followed suit, and by 10:30 the Mouth end of the Reading Room was deserted.

A North Yard Janitor, Owen Roberts, reported that he arrived on duty at 11 p.m. to find three other janitors engaged in a futile attempt to fumigate the phone booth. "We cleaned it for three hours, but the smell's still there," Roberts said "I suggested in my report to Buildings and Grounds that the phone booth be removed. I wish to hell they's flooded the cellar instead," he concluded rather bitterly.

Arthur E. Sutherland, Bussey Professor of Law, reached for comment last night, said he was not present to witness the incident, but remarked "I deeply regret the smell of hell: I', against hell and I'm in favor of heaven.
