Stickmen Defeat Holy Cross 16-2 To End Four Game Losing Streak

The Harvard lacrosse team finally figured out how to put the ball in the net and walloped Holy Cross, yesterday, 16-2

The win broke a Crimson four game losing streak and set Coach Bruce Munro wondering why he didn't schedule the Grusaders earlier in the season.

Keith Hutchinsch sent the Crimson out to their usual early lead on a setup from Marty Cain behind the net. Hutchinson tallied on a breakaway with about a minute left in the period to put Harvard out in front. 2-0, and set the stage for the team's usual second period lapse.

That lapse never occurred. Harvard scored six goals in the quarter--more than they've scored in the second quarters of their last five games put together!

Ted Leary got four points in the period and two goals and two assists. Steve Neubert chipped in two goals and an assist, including one great quickstick of a Leary pass. First midfielders Dex Newton and Jan Bollinger added the other two.

In the third period Harvard relaxed the pressure on the hapless Crusaders. The Crimson still could not help scoring three goals on shots by Bollinger. Al Timberlake, and Larry Palmer. Palmer's shot just beat the gun at the end of the period to make the score, 11.2.

By this time the Holy Cross goalie must have been a bit shell-shocked. Besides the eleven that got past him he had alrady stopped 24 shots.

The effects on him certainly showed in the fourth quarter. Harvard played nine men, who played little all year, but the nine saw plenty of action yesterday as Harvard scored five more.

Dex Newton and Leary both picked up hat tricks, and Leary wound up with seven points for the game. Sophomore Chuck Wiggin picked up the first goal of his varsity career by grabbing a loose ball in front of the net and firing it past the Crusader goalie.
