Ernest Kitzinger, a leading art historian at the Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection in Washington, D.C., has been named the first A. Kingsley Porter University Professor at Harvard in 1947, 1952, and 1960.

While teaching and researching in fine arts at Harvard next year, Kitzinger -- who specializes in Byzantine and early medieval art -- will continue on the faculty of Dumbarton Oaks where he was Director of Studies from 1955 to 1966. He is doing research this year at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton.

The Porter Professorship -- honoring the late Harvard archaeologist -- was bequeathed to the University by Mrs. Porter on her death in 1963. Poerter, William Dorr Boardman Professor of Fine Arts when he died in 1933, caused important revisions in the history of medieval architecture through his archaeological research.

Kitzinger, whose appointment is effective July 1, will teach courses on Early Christian and Byzantine art next year.
