First baseman John Ignacio will captain the Crimson nine in defense of its Eastern Intercollegiate Baseball League crown next year.

Ignacio, who also played cornerback for the varsity football squad, is one of Harvard's best hitters. Topping the team with 17 runs batted in, he slugged his way to a .303 average this spring with five doubles and two home runs. He was third in stolen bases with ten thefts.

After playing third base as a sophomore on the J.V. squad, Ignacio broke into the varsity line-up at that position early in the season. He never played first before this year, but when coach Norm Shepard decided to make the shift, he managed to make the transition without harming his performance.

"We didn't expect him to make the switch as quickly as he did," Shepard said, "but he adjusted to the new position very well. He not only proved himself to be a good defensive player, but he hit consistently with excellent power. He should make an excellent captain."
