Dorfman Urges Unofficial Vote

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Robert Dorfman, professor of Economies, has proposed a Faculty "convocation" next Tuesday to vote unofficially on two "political" issues slated for the special Faculty meeting that afternoon.

Referring to the resolution by Mark Ptashne, lecturer in Biochemistry, against the Vietnam war and one by George Wald, Higgins Professor of Biology, calling for a Faculty stand against the draft, Dorfman said the convocation would eliminate pressure on Faculty members opposed to their resolution.

"On the whole it is a good thing for the Faculty to put itself on record against the war, but not as an official body," Dorfman said. "And it is all the more important that the Faculty not be in a situation where by voting against the Ptashne resolution they are voting for the Vietnam war."

Dorfman said he will ask that the convocation be held immediately after the regular Faculty meeting in the Loeb auditorium.

Some members of both the conservative and liberal caucuses have expressed their support for the convocation. but neither group has endorsed it. The liberal caucus will meet this afternoon and the conservative caucus will meet over the weekend.

Dorfman said he has asked Ptashne to save his resolution until the convocation. Ptashne, however, has already committed himself to submitting the proposal, Dorfman said.
