Netmen to Face Big Red, Cadets

By Stephen F. Kelley

Harvard's varsity tennis team will host Cornell this afternoon at home at 2 p.m. The netmen defeated the Big Red last year, 8-1, and should have little more difficulty this season. The only way a close match could develop is if the Crimson is looking past Cornell to contests with Army tomorrow and Navy Monday.

Harvard won contest against both teams last year. 6-3, and this year the decisions could be equally close. The military universities' superior conditioning may give them the edge in the long matches. Navy seems to be the stronger, and playing on their home courts should make the Middies even tougher. Navy captain, Bob Cowen leads a team that is undefeated in Eastern play. In a contest earlier this year, the Crimson trailed 1-0 in matches, with the other five singles contests being close battles when rain ended the meet.

Army, having suffered heavy losses from graduation, has senior Rick Wilbur at number one position, backed up by Bill Malkemes at number two. The Cadets, whose main strength lies in their depth, have been rained out in all Eastern matches to date.

Cornell coach Eddie Moylan will bring captain Steve Belkin with juniors Toby Marion and Dave Tepper to Cambridge today. Cornell, perenially weak, is no exception this year.

It appears that the tennis team will have to win its last five matches if it is to tie for the Eastern title with Penn and Princeton. Coach John Barnaby says he hopes that his team which has worked so hard will close out the season with top laurels.
