Cliffies Move to Houses

By Deborah B. Johnson

Well, folks, this is it-it's all over. Two Harvard Houses are now officially coed, with a third to fall next week.

Forty-nine Cliffies exchanged places with 48 Adams House men yesterday; Lowell House men will officially move into East House today; and Winthrop and North Houses have postponed their switch until this Saturday. When it's finished, 147 girls will be Harvard men, and there will be 146 male Cliffies.

Chaos prevailed over the weekend while students moved out of their rooms and into new homes that others were vacating. Adams rented three trucks to help the effort-one of them was a large white van with "Wonder Bread" written on the back and "Hostess Cakes" on the sides.

Feelings about the move ranged from awe ("I don't believe it - I never thought we'd really live in Adams," from one girl) to exhausted lamentation ("Oh God, never again," from several people as they staggered away from moving boxes of books).

One Adams junior said, as he was trying to wedge a large rug around a small stairwell in Bertrain Hall, "I used to have good reason for moving to the 'Cliffe, but looking at these four flights of stairs, I'm not so sure any more."

Many of those not actually changing rooms were unmoved, however. "Really, I don't give a shit - I'm trying to move off-campus as soon as possible," said a Winthrop sophomore.

New Situation

Notices posted on bulletin boards announced that many administrative points have been changed for the new coed situation. The Adams House pool will be coed starting today-"i. e. bathing, suits required," a sign said.

William Liller, Master of Adams House, also announced that Adams willhave interhouse for Radcliffe students (of both sexes) on Mondays and Thursdays - making it the first - house interhouse for lunch.

As the weekend ended, the sentiment was one of relief that the planning, organizing, and actualizing was almost finished. "Thank God it's over," sighed Dale Partoll 73, or of the East House switch.
