Hit by a marked increase in thefts during the last month and a half, the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts (VAC) is now planning to implement tighter security measures.

"We are considering technological means for security and increased surveillance--more people inspecting and checking the building at more times." Eduard F. Sekler, Osgood Professor of Visual Arts and director of Carpenter Center, said yesterday.

He said the department of Buildings and Grounds is estimating the cost of installing various alarm and closed-circuit television systems.

office of C. Todd Stuart, teaching assistant in Photography.

The third-floor office of the VAC was broken into the weekend of October 30, but nothing was taken.

Concern over security mounted when a student working on a Visual Studies assignment was mugged November 1 at Harvard and Prescott Streets. The student was not hurt, and he did not lose his camera, but "it's close enough to feel close to home, Sekler said.

Last Thursday two young men, who were seen running out of Carpenter Center from the shipping room, dropped a can key that belonged to the superintendent.
