Crimson Icemen Dominate the East

The Crimson hockey squad heads into exam break with a 10-1 record and the number one ranking among the nation's top collegiate hockey teams. Harvard also stands atop the Ivy League and the Fastern College Athletic Conference (FCAC) Division. I but with the season law than half over almost anything can happen.

At this point, the Division I face shapes up to be a wild one Harvard leads the division with a "I record but hanging close behind are Clarkson (7.3). Penn (6.2) and Cornell With both Penn and Cornell getting another shot at the Crimson on their home ice. Harvard certainly doesn't have it wrapped up.

Boston University and Boston College, both 5-3 in Division I play, are also potential threats. BU will face Harvard in the opening round of the Beanpot Tourney February 5, and should the Crimson made it to the finals, it will probably face B.C., winner of seven straight since their tough 6.4 loss to Harvard, who should best Northeastern in the opening round.

Harvard dominates the individual statistics as well, with the "Local Time" leading in scoring and goalie Joe Bertagna leading the division in stopping his opponents from scoring. In total points. Dave Hynes leads all scorers with 14 while Bill Corkers and Bob McManama stand second and third with 32 and 29 points respectively Hynes has the best points per game average as well, 3.09 while Corkers is second holding a 2.90 average McManama stands fourth behind Bill Murray averaging 2.63 points per game.

Bertagna who was tied with Words of Clarkson going into Monday's contest with Northeastern pulled ahead on the basis of his two period shutout performance while Woods allowed five goals on Clarkson 5-4 overtime loss to Colgate this week. Bertagna's average now stands at 284 goals against per game.

Ivy League

In the Ivy League, Harvard posts a league-leading 4.1 record. Cornell (2.0) the only team to best Harvard, holds down second place among with Yale (2.0) Dartmouth (2.2) and Brown (2.4). All four teams get four points in the standings, but Cornell has he obvious advantage having placed only two league games.

Penn 1-2 in the league and 8-2 hosted Cornell last night in what was a crucial contest for both teams on both the Ivy league and FCAC standings. Penn will travel to Dartmouth tomorrow and Yale on January 27 while Cornell takes on Dartmouth at home.

As might he expected. Hynes dominates the scoring statistics in the Ivy League as well. In five games, he has racked up six goals and ten assists for a 3.20 point per game average along with Bob Kane of Yale. Doug Merrett of Cornell and Peter Quinn of Dartmouth.

Bertagna has the second best goals against average in the league behind Cornell's Dave Elenbaas, followed Peter Proulx of Dartmouth and Dave Sagaser to Brown.
