UFW Organizer Forms New Group, Claims Lettuce Boycott Is Ineffective

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

A student coordinator for the United Farm Workers said last night that UFW's boycott on non-Union lettuce has so far been ineffective.

Mary M. Lassen '75, Harvard-Radcliffe coordinator for UFW, said that the proportion of UFW lettuce on the market has dropped from 15 to 10 per cent.

"At present," Lassen said, "there are only two restaurants in the Harvard Square area which use UFW lettuce... Underdog and Casa Mexico."

Chavez

Lassen, speaking at a meeting of an as yet unnamed group formed to support Cesar Chavez's movement, outlined a plan of action which included the picketing of area restaurants and supermarkets not selling UFW lettuce.

The group, which is an outgrowth of the New American Movement (NAM) and Students for McGovern, is already engaged in picketing three A & P Supermarkets, and plans to expand its activities in the future.

In addition to supporting Chavez, the group will be working in the Indochina Peace Campaign.
