RUS Grants Not Delayed Despite Resignation Amendment Sought to Hold Mid-Term Election

By Hollis Gorman

The Radcliffe Union of Students (RUS) has not delayed financial grants, including an $800 grant to the Phillips Brooks House Women's Center, despite a current dispute about management of RUS funds.

The dispute began last month when RUS treasurer Kimberley McDaniel '75 submitted her resignation. RUS president Janet Collins '75 said yesterday that the RUS legislature has continued to appropriate funds in the absence of a treasurer.

The Women's Center has not yet received the $800 grant, but there has been no unusual delay in that appropriation, Collins said.

Treasurer Problems

However, RUS has had problems in trying to install a new treasurer.

McDaniel said she resigned because she felt her busy schedule prevented her from doing an effective job as treasurer. She said she felt RUS will not need a treasurer until new elections are held in February, because the RUS legislature can appropriate funds independently.

The RUS constitution makes no provision for the resignation of officers in mid-term. RUS has customarily abided by Robert's Rules of Order in all cases not specified in the constitution, Collins said.

She said RUS decided to amend the constitution when McDaniel refused to recognize an election held under Robert's Rules of Order and withheld accounts of RUS loan-grant program funds. The treasurer appropriates these funds in the spring for individual projects, McDaniel said. McDaniel returned all other accounts to Collins.

The amendment would give the RUS legislature the power to elect new officers in cases of mid-term resignations.

Voting on the amendment will be completed tonight. Collins said she anticipates that the amendment will be passed.
