Winthrop Triumphs, Eliot Is Victorious In Soccer Playoffs

Yesterday's intramural soccer playoffs pitted American League champion Eliot House against National League champion Kirkland House. Kirkland's record in round-robin tournament play stood at 1-0 after defeating Winthrop, 3-1, on Wednesday, but Eliot edged their more physical opponents, 2-1, in perhaps the most exciting game played to date.

The first quarter was dominated completely by Eliot as Dave Evans connected on a low line drive beyond the outstretched hands of the Kirkland goalie. Kirkland then came back in the second quarter to tie the game as the Eliot House offense fell apart.

Center halfback Eddie Perry singlehandedly held Kirkland together as they continued to apply pressure through the third period. In the fourth period, however, Eliot came alive again, as John Hunter headed in a shot to ice the game.

In a game played later, Winthrop House trounced Dunster House, 5-1, behind the four-goal effort of Ralph Warren. Michael McHugh added the lone score for the winners.

This Monday, the teams will meet in the final round of tournament play as Eliot will battle Winthrop and Kirkland, Dunster. However, the championship will not be decided until the following day when Eliot meets Dunster in a make-up game for the rained-out match scheduled last Tuesday.
