White Youths Attack Black Freshman In Maverick Square Subway Station

By Francis J. Connolly

A group of about seven white youths shouting racial epithets attacked Dennis J. Henderson '79, who is black, in the Maverick Square MBTA station in East Boston last Friday night.

Henderson suffered multiple bruises and abrasions as a result of the incident, but was released that same evening after being treated in the University Health Services clinic.

The attackers ran him out of a large crowd of commuters as he was returning from Trinity Neighborhood House, where he is a counselor for retarded children, Henderson said yesterday.

Blitzkrieg

"They had some sort of planned attack," he said, adding that the group had first let him pass on the street and enter the station before charging at him from behind.

Henderson said no one in the crowded station offered him any assistance while the youths were beating him.
