Sullivan Breaks Record Again

By Peter R. Reynolds

In greater Boston, Radcliffe tops them all. Anne Sullivan broke the Franklin Park course record for the third time in three meets--this time by six seconds--at yesterday's Greater Boston Championships, leading the women's cross-country team to victory over five opponents.

"I really did not expect to break the record today," the ever-improving freshman Sullivan said. Kathy Whitcomb of Tufts, her only challenger, finished 26 seconds behind the winner's time of 17:31.

Team Depth

Radcliffe runners Johanna Foreman, Sarah Linsley and Kat Taylor demonstrated the team's general strength, charging to third, fifth and sixth places to secure the 'Cliffe victory.

Radcliffe won the race with 24 points to Tufts's 79, Brandeis's 88 and Boston University's 106. MIT and Boston College did not have the mandatory runners for official competition. The 'Cliffe added ninth, thirteenth and fifteenth places to dominate the top runners.

"It was a tremendous mass of Crimson," exclaimed jubilant team manager Debbie Vogel yesterday.

Although the sun shone yesterday, Vogel said the course was "muddy and mucky after all the rain recently.

No Leaks

The team must now see if it can hold water in Amherst next Sunday. The UMass harriers are the only ones to outrun the Harvard women this year, with that defeat coming in the women's first race of the season. Sullivan said yesterday she is not worried personally and has confidence the whole team will do better than before.

Every runner has improved her time since the first race, so the 'Cliffe may take revenge on UMass Sunday.
