PHILADELPHIA--They were looking ahead to next week's meet against Yale and the following week's Eastern Championships, so their times were not as strong as in previous weeks, but the Harvard swimmers still performed well enough to drown a weak Pennsylvania team last night here at Penn's Scheerr pool, 72-39.
Crimson coach Pete Orscheidt said after the meet, "We were not as sharp as usual, because we were gearing our efforts towards the next two meets."
Scheerr Luck
The highlight of the meet for the Crimson was Tom Wolf's 200-yd. backstroke. In that event, Wolf breezed to a new Scheerr pool record, touching at 1:54.g.
Harvard never trailed in the meet, losing only two events: the one-meter diving and the 400-yd. freestyles relay. In that relay, Harvard swam a non-point-scoring "exhibition" group which finished first, but did not count in the meet results.
From the diving board, freshman Mike Gavin turned in a strong second-place finish with some well executed dives from the one-meter board. Harvard's Steve Schramm, Jamie Graecen and Mike Toal sprung to a one-two-three sweep in the three-meter event.
Crimson diving coach John Walker said the divers, like the swimmers, were also not exceptional. But he added that Gavin's and Schramm's performances were solid.
Orschiedt said after the meet that despite the men's current 5-2 record, (the swimmers lost only once last year) he views this season as a successful one.
"I am looking for a lot of individual time improvement," he said. "I want to get everyone swimming their best, and right now the guys are swimming well."
