Bobby Schmautz beat Ken Dryden low and to the left at 13:38 of sudden death overtime at the Boston Garden last night to give the Bruins a 4-3 victory and tie their Stanley Cup playoff series with the Canadiens at two-apiece.

Schmautz took a pass from Gregg Sheppard on the left side, turned quickly on a diving Larry Robinson, then banged the 25-footer past Dryden to set off a joyous celebration.

Serge Savard had sent the game into OT when, with just 33 seconds left in regulation and Dryden on the bench, he flipped a bounding puck past Gerry Cheevers from point-blank range.

Brad Park, Sheppard, and Peter McNab also scored for Boston.

In other pro action, the Seattle Supersonics beat Washington, 106-102, in their NBA championship opener, and the Red Sox split a doubleheader with Detroit.
