By Raj Marphatia

Chess Master Ilan Vardi gave a display of simultaneous chess against 11 members of the Harvard-Radcliffe chess club in a three-hour performance at the Science Center Tuesday night.

Vardi, a 21-year old first-year graduate student at MIT, won seven games, lost two, and drew the remaining two games. He has a U.S. Chess Federation rating of 2201, which qualifies him for the title of Master.

Howard Bromberg, '80, captain of this year's ('A') chess team, was able to salvage one win from Vardi, Bromberg said he is optimistic about the chances of the team this year, both in local tournaments and in the Pan-American tournament.

All members of the University are eligible to vie for positions on the three teams that represent Harvard in chess tournaments, Allan Smith '80 president of the Harvard-Radcliffe Chess Club, said.
