Quincy, Kirkland Earn Shutout Wins

The Quincy House football squad, which promised its legions of fans "another season of finely tuned destruction," almost self-destructed yesterday, having to capitalize on a last-minute interception to gain an 8-0 victory over a combined Winthrop/Leverett unit.

Unable to score all afternoon, the Lon Hatamiya-directed offense had apparently settled for a scoreless tie when it coughed up the ball on downs at its own 32-yd. line with about two minutes left in the game.

On the first play in the Winthrop drive, quarterback Charlie Slack went back into the pocket but was hit hard by blitzing defensive end Lance Miller as he let go of the ball. Running back-turned-linebacker Steve Nicholas picked off the errant pass and then scampered 36 yds. down the right sideline for the score.

Nicholas, who also ground out 91 yards to enjoy a fine day on offense, caught the two-point Hatamiya conversion pass. Don't tell the officials, but Nicholas also centered the snap on the conversion attempt.

In yesterday's first game, Kirkland House didn't have to resort to any last-minute theatrics, simply rolling over an over-matched and underexperienced Currier House squad, 20-0.

A big, mean defense and running back Todd Elkins did it all for the K-House hordes. Elkins scored three touchdowns to account for all the points in the game.

The first tally, however, must be credited to the Currier offense, which proved totally ineffective, moving from its own 35-yd. line to its own nine before losing the ball on a fumble.

Following a brief goal line stand by an enthusiastic Currier defensive unit, Elkins on fourth down punched the ball over the goal line from four out.

Q.B. Mike Ryan hit receiver Gordon Anderson for big gains on each of the other two Kirkland scoring drives. Elkins hit paydirt with runs of 17 and five yds.

Fight Fiercely

House football action continues tomorrow, when Eliot House meets Dunster/Mather and defending champion SoHo takes on Lowell House behind the stadium.
