The Faculty Council yesterday approved a proposal to make Martin Luther King's birthday a half-day academic holiday.

Under the proposal, the holiday would begin at 1 p.m. on January 15, which usually falls during reading period. About once every five years, however, January 15 falls during exam period. When it does, the proposal calls for starting exams one-half day earlier.

The full Faculty will consider the proposal at its May 6 meeting.

The Council also again approved and sent on to the full Faculty a proposal to give advanced standing only to freshmen who receive three grades of four or better on Advanced Placement tests. Currently three grades of three or better are required.

The Faculty considered that proposal at its March meeting but tabled it because of lack of time.

In other business the Council placed on the Faculty docket a proposal to include in the "Handbook for Students" a statement that students who misuse fire extinguishers face disciplinary action.
