Five-Year College Study Questionnaires Out Today

The second in a series of yearly questionnaires designed to see how college life affects women's career goals will be distributed today by the Harvard-Radcliffe office of the Seven College Study.

All 3200 students who received the questionnaire last year will receive it again this year. In addition, all the women and a "comparative sampling" of men in the Class of '85 filled out the form during Freshman Week, officials said.

Backgrounds

"The information included on the questionnaire will be analyzed in terms of how students with different backgrounds and interests change their goals and interests during college and the first few years after they graduate," Diana Zuckerman, director of the study, said last week.

The questionnaire has a statistical format--students are asked to rate aspects of their personalities, interests and goals on a scale. "Results will be reported for large groups of students, rather than for individuals," Zuckerman said.

Last spring, 64 per cent of the students surveyed at Harvard responded to the five-year survey, which is funded by a $650,000 grant from the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation. The sampling included 2200 women and a "control group" of 1000 men. Another 5800 women were surveyed at Barnard, Bryn Mawr, Mount Holyoke, Smith, Vassar and Wellesley.

"The survey provides an unprecedented opportunity for students to show faculty and administrators how they do or do not benefit from different college programs and services," Zuckerman said.
