College Peace Alliance Plans 'Peace Week' Activities, Forum

By William J. Jason

The Radcliffe-Harvard Peace Alliance's "Peace Week" begins today with the first of a series of dinner time speakers. The week will culminate in a forum about "Militarism, Justice and the Future" Friday.

Gregory Fried '83, one of the Alliance's organizers, said he "believes there is a connection between growing militarism, violence and social apathy," and that more programs like Peace Week are needed to "get people thinking about alternatives."

"I don't think we'll get many converts to the Peace Alliance," he added, "but it will establish communication on our ideas, which is more important."

Friday's forum will open with a speech by Cheryl Keen, coordinator of Harvard's International Studies Table, on militarism and then break into four workshops on related subjects, generally pacifistic alternatives to militarism that the Alliance supports.

George Sommaripa, a member of the Citizens for Participation in Political Action who will head a workshop on "The Domestic Effects of Militarism," said yesterday he supports holding separate workshops because "you can't tackle every aspect of American militarism at once. It's too much for the public to bite off, and they become apathetic."

A talk on "Registration and the Draft" will be given at Thursday's dinner in the Freshman Union by Saundra Graham, a member of the Cambridge City Council.

"I will advocate not to register for the draft and probably propose some alternatives for students," Graham said, adding. "I'll never let my children register."
