About 15 freshmen accepted last year as forced commuters will be able to live on campus next year despite the College's earlier insistence that the students were admitted without any guarantee of housing.

The Faculty Council, an influential advisory panel of professors, yesterday decided to allow the non-resident students to enter next week's freshman housing lottery. But the Council did not discuss any other aspects of the general problem of non-resident and transfer students.

The Council decided to act on this short-term problem for reasons of timing, explained Secretary of the Council, John R. Marquand. "Otherwise, the non-resident freshmen would not be able to choose roommates in time for the lottery," he said.

Later this spring, the Council is expected to discuss a recently prepared subcommittee report on the problems of non-resident students.

Yesterday's action came despite officials' indication last week that a decision on housing non-resident freshmen this year would not come until after a long-term policy had been set.
