Council Bans Funded Travel To Cities That Discriminate

By Evan P. Cucci

The City Council passed a resolution Monday prohibiting the use of city funds for travel to or from any state or town whose laws disallow specific protection of the civil rights of minorities.

The resolution, sponsored by Councillor Edward N. Cyr, was written in response to a recently passed amendment to the Colorado State constitution which prohibits and laws protecting rights based on sexual orientation.

The resolution also cites Denver, Aspen, and several cities in California which have moved to restrict gay rights.

Deputy City Clerk John Flynn said yesterday there have been no City Council trips to Colorado at least since 1987.

According to the order the resolution is meant to protest "affirmative hatred."

The council order asks the city manager to compile a list of cities with laws that prohibit extending protections to gay men and lesbians
