Glee club Is Traveling To East Asia, Midwest

By Setha Mnookin

Harvard's Glee Club on the move. Just back from Texas, the club will be traveling through the Midwest this spring and will be singing in Asia this summer.

The Glee Club returned Monday from a successful appearance at the five-day American Choral Director's Association Annual Convention in San Antonio.

At the convention, the Glee Club was chosen to perform one of the 45 minute-long feature concerts, the only amateur group to receive that honor.

"It was an amazing honor, and an amazing thrill," Glee Club Co-president Patrick R. Harlan '93 said.

The Westminster Choir, the Netherlands National Chorus, and the Ohio State University Robert Shaw Choral--all of them professional groups--were also given featured spots.

Harvard's performances were extremely well received, Harlan said. "They loved us. We're very excited about our next couple of tours."

During spring break, the Glee Club will tour Wichita, Kansas City, St. Louis. Memphis and Tupelo, Miss., according to Koshy Mathai '94, the group's vice president, and then will tour East Asia this summer. "We haven't been to Asia in about a decade, so we're very excited," Mathai said.

The group will perform in China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan as part of the five-week tour.

"The Summer trips are great," Mathai said. "The group has a wonderful dynamic. We all get along great, and love to spend time together, just hanging out.

"Still" Mathai added, "our fundamental purpose is singing together and making good music."
