Harvard Needs Better Native American Recruitment

By Deidra SUWANEE Dees

To the editors:

I am a Native American (Muscogee) doctoral candidate at the Harvard School of Education and I appreciate the candid and well-researched article giving visibility to the “invisible minority” here at Harvard (Magazine, “The Invisible Minority,” April 15). I hope this article reaches key people in this institution who will be motivated to act on this well-presented report.

As a Harvard student, and as a graduate of Cornell University, I agree with the report on the need for aggressive recruitment and improved programs for Native Americans. This article contained insightful remarks and candid historical statistics on Native Americans at Harvard.

I wonder if The Crimson might consider doing a follow-up to this article this fall after we see just how many Native students actually arrive at Harvard in comparison to other minorities. Overall, it was an enlightening article.
