HUPD Chief Says Harvard Yard Encampment is Peaceful, Defends Students’ Right to Protest
A year or two ago an agitation was started to raise subscriptions for a new reading room which should be connected with the library and should be kept open during the evening. This feeling was caused by a desire to obtain two things, a better lighted and better ventilated room than the present reading room in the library, and also a place where the resources of the library could be used in the evening without danger of destroying by fire volumes which could never be replaced. The college and graduates were canvassed for subscriptions, and the result up to September 1, 1892, was kindly provided by Mr. Moses Williams, the treasurer of the fund. It is as follows:
Total amount of subscriptions paid, $12,473,37
Interest rec'd on bank deposits, 289.61
Interest rec'd on fund invested, 250.00
-
Total cash receipts, $13,012.98
Total amount of subscriptions promised and unpaid, 9,535.00
-
Total, $22,547.98
