Royal Phelps Carroll Cup.

The old Royal Phelps Carroll cup, for single sculling, which has been lost for over ten years, is now known to be in the possession of Finlay '91, who won it last. Sixteen years ago the cup was given by Royal Phelps Carroll and J. E. Thayer, both members of the class of '85, under the following conditions: "It shall be a perpetual challenge cup, to be held one year and to be open to all members of the University. In the event of the holder's leaving College, the cup shall be returned to the boat club."

In '85 the cup was won by J. B. Fletcher '87; in '86 by J. W. Wood '88; in '87 it was again won by J. B. Fletcher. It does not seem to have been rowed for in '88, but in '89 Finlay '91 was the winner. This is the last race recorded.

It has only recently been discovered that the cup is still in the possession of Finlay, and he has been notified to return it, so that it may be rowed for next spring.
