MR. BRYCE'S FIRST LECTURE

The Right Honorable James Bryce, M.P., will deliver the first of his series of lectures under the Godkin Lectureship this evening at 8 o'clock in Sanders Theatre, on "The Study of Popular Governments."

Mr. Bryce, who is a strong Home-Ruler, was born in Belfast in 1838, and is a graduate of Oxford. In 1870 he was returned to Parliament for Tower Hamlets, in 1885 for Aberdeen, and in 1886 he became Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs in Mr. Gladstone's government. In 1892 he became chancellor of the duchy of Lancaster. He is the author of "The American Common-wealth" and "The Holy Roman Empire," as well as of other books on history and law.

This evening Mr. Bryce will speak on "The Essentials of Free Governments, and the Duties of the Citizen," treating of the foundation of popular governments, and discussing the recent increase in material for the scientific study of free governments, the difficulties of such study, and the need for applying scientific method to political phenomena.

The lectures will be open to the public, but seats on the floor and in the first gallery will be reserved for members of the University until 7.55 o'clock.

The second of the series of five lectures will be given on Wednesday evening.
